HARE KRSNA!

Dear Friends,

Hope this meets you all well.

"Focusing the mind on Krishna by performing devotional service is not only completely satisfying, but it is also the most effective way to make progress toward spiritual perfection."- HG Vaisesika Dasa

Today is the auspicious beginning of holy month of Kartika. Kartika (Damodar) is the best, the purest of purifiers, and most glorious of all months. Kartika month is particularly dear to Lord Sri Krishna. This month is full of bhakta vatsalya. Any vrata, even the smallest, will yield huge results. The effect of performing a Kartika Vrata lasts for one hundred lifetimes, Kartika or the festival of offering lamps to Lord Krishna, glorifies Lord Krishna’s pastime of being bound with ropes by Mother Yashoda.

Every day, devotees come to the Temple and offer a candle or ghee lamp to Lord Damodara.  The Damodarastakam, a series of eight beautiful verses by the great sage Satyavrata Muni is sung daily in the morning and evening.

This week we have:

Wednesday: Bhagavad Gita Discourse by H.G Balimardan Das

Saturday: "Prayers of Surrender by Gajendra" - Srimad Bhagavatam Discourse by H.G Damodar Vamsidhari Das

Easy 5 minute austerity this Kartik month to calm the disturbed mind and please Lord Krishna

Dear Friends,

Spend just 5 to 7 minutes every day and enormously increase your transcendental credit this all-auspicious Kartik month!

Invisible Elements

In life, invisible elements are more important than the visible elements. For example we may not see the invisible foundation of a skyscraper, but an invisible foundation sustains the entire building. Similarly the invisible mind plays a vital role in the success of human life. While the medical industry has more than 50 divisions to deal with the health of the visible body, it just has two growing fields of psychiatry and psychology departments to deal with the most important invisible entity - The Mind!

Global Disability

The happiness and distress that every human being experiences are two extreme states of the mind. Everyone welcomes happiness but depression, dejection, and demotivation are not welcomed. WHO (World Health Organization) predicts that by 2020, depression will be the second leading cause of global disability. Modern science is still struggling to deal with depression that attacks 1 in every 20.  Here is where the the instructions that Lord Krishna spoke in Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna, who was depressed and demotivated, are utilizable. After hearing Bhagavad Gita Arjuna got out of his negative thoughts and depression, fought with full motivation and won the war by the mercy of Lord Krishna. This is a time tested solution. This relief is possible even today for every individual who reads Bhagavad Gita everyday with great faith, focus and attention.

Train the troubled mind

Therefore, it is very important that we read Bhagavad Gita everyday and deeply understand our nature and realize our true identity as Lord Krishna's servants and train the troubled mind to always think of Lord Krishna. What better time is there to read Bhagavad Gita than during Lord Krishna's most favourite month of Kartik. All our other sacrifices and austerities become glorious just by attentively chanting a chapter of Bhagavad-gita. This is confirmed in the Puranas, that a person who happily reads the Bhagavad Gita in the month of Kartik does not return to the world of birth and death.

Bhagavad-Gita Chapter-A-Day (CHAD) program , is a worldwide alliance of devotees who chant at least one chapter of Bhagavad-Gita As It Is. This program, officially inaugurated by His Grace Vaisesika Prabhu, has been enthusiastically executed by many souls around the globe. HG. Vaisesika Prabhu has suggested that the members recite the 16 th chapter of Bhagavad Gita every day during this most auspicious month of Kartik. We humbly request everyone to join this global initiative to please Lord Krishna and conquer over the disturbances of the mind during this Kartik.

Srila Prabhupada on Chanting and Reading the Bhagavad-gita

Here are a few things that Srila Prabhupada said about chanting and reading Bhagavad-gita:

"If one commits any of the above offenses, [offences to be avoided while worshiping the Deity
are listed] one must read at least one chapter of Bhagavad-gita. This is confirmed in the
Skanda-Purana, Avanti-khanda." (SB 7.5.23 Purport)

"Please try to read this Bhagavad-gita As It Is. It is science of God. You will understand… You will realize. And chant this Hare Krsna mantra. This Hare Krishna mantra will cleanse your heart. And after cleansing your heart, if you read one chapter of Bhagavad-gita, you will understand gradually what is God, what you are, what is your relationship with God. And when you understand all these things and you develop your love of God, you become
perfectly happy." (SP conversation May, 12, 1969)

"Anywhere Bhagavad-gita is chanted, that place becomes a tirtha [a holy place]." (SP quoted
in Lilamrta)

"When you study very carefully all of the literatures which are available, especially Bhagavadgita As It Is, you will have in your grasp answers to all questions that may be put to you. Please encourage the others to read this Bhagavad-gita at least one chapter every day."
(Letter to Upendra, January 6, 1969)
